Incisive Art Installations & Collages by Barbara Kruger
Published Jan 11, 2024
American artist Barbara Kruger has been challenging societal norms and power structures through her striking art installations and collages for over four decades. Best known for her large-scale black-and-white photographs overlaid with provocative and confrontational text, Barbara’s work is as incisive as it is iconic.
Barbara began her artistic journey as a designer and art director before turning to collage and installation art. Her early experiences in the publishing world greatly influenced her style, which often resembles advertising and uses techniques from graphic design.
One of her most famous works is the image titled “Your Body is a Battleground,” created in 1989 for the Women’s March on Washington in support of reproductive rights. This piece exemplifies Barbara’s ability to encapsulate complex social issues within succinct and powerful phrases, coupled with compelling visual imagery.
