Hyper-Saturated Mixed Media Artworks by Amani Lewis
Published May 29, 2024
Amani Lewis is a prolific Baltimore-based artist who creates incredible mixed media artworks that capture the beauty and humanity of Baltimore’s Black community.
Amani’s work is deeply informed by historical contexts, particularly the era of “The Great Migration,” when Black individuals fled racial terror in the rural South to seek refuge in urban areas like Baltimore. These migrations brought with them memories, resilience, and a longing for connection to the land.
Amani’s powerful pieces often begin with a photograph, which the artist then distorts and saturates to create an aesthetic reminiscent of topographical or heat maps. By layering paint and textures over the prints, the artworks become vibrant, living sites teeming with life, energy, and complexity. The layering process in Amani’s work serves as a metaphor for the layered histories and stories of Baltimore’s residents. Each artwork is imbued with vibrancy, life, heat, energy, growth, healing, safety, magic and music. These elements collectively enrich the narrative and amplify the voices of the people depicted in their works.
