Greenland, Unclaimed: Stunning Images of a Place That Wants to Be Left Alone

Published Jan 19, 2026

Finnish photographer Dennis Lehtonen captures Greenland as a place shaped by scale, natural beauty and everyday resilience. His photographs move between pastel skies, frozen coastlines and small clusters of colorful homes holding their ground against vast terrain. At a time when Greenland is increasingly framed through geopolitical discussion, these images pull focus back to the land itself and the communities that inhabit it, steady, self-contained and uninterested in conflict or spectacle.

Dennis’s fascination with the night sky is what drives his journey, pushing him toward some of the most isolated places on the planet where true dark skies still exist. To reach these remote settlements, he lives a nomadic life, taking on physically demanding jobs outside his comfort zone, including work in fish factories and slaughterhouses. During the winter of 2024-25, he traveled across northern Greenland without permanent shelter, relying on the generosity of strangers, often without sharing a common language.

That commitment continues as his focus shifts south, with plans to document the southernmost inhabited areas of Greenland next. Through patience, proximity and lived experience, his photographs offer a grounded portrait of a place best understood on its own terms.
