Glitchy Glamour: Caricature Paintings by Teiji Hayama
Published Mar 22, 2023
Japanese artist Teiji Hayama explores themes of identity, social contact and overstimulation in his caricatured paintings of iconic celebrities.
His paintings are powerful visualizations of multiphrenia, a term coined by Kenneth Gergen to describe a condition that is largely attributed to technologies that increase social contact, of being simultaneously drawn in multiple and conflicting directions.
Teiji often applies a ‘glitchy’ collage aesthetic to his oil on canvas paintings, depicting celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Bruce Lee, Grace Kelly and Goldie Hawn with unsettling, exaggerated facial features.
Through his art, he delves into the emotional aspects of each character portrayed, exploring how we shape our identities through social interactions and external stimuli.
