Fragmented Realities: Yoshitoshi Kanemaki’s Surreal Wooden Sculptures

Published Sep 8, 2025

Japanese sculptor Yoshitoshi Kanemaki is back on the grid with another mesmerizing series of life-size wooden figures that distort perception and multiply emotion. Known for his ability to carve uncanny expressions into camphor wood, Kanemaki pushes his practice further by fragmenting bodies and layering faces, creating surreal optical effects that feel like three-dimensional glitches.

His latest works expand on his recurring theme of duplicated heads, introducing prism-like bodies sliced into kaleidoscopic sections. The result is both playful and unsettling, capturing multiple states of mind at once – hesitation, joy, longing – as if time itself is somehow trapped within the wood.

You can see more of his work on Instagram and Behance.
