Flatball: Spherical Paintings by Daisuke Samejima
Published May 5, 2023
Japanese artist Daisuke Samejima is known for his unique take on photorealistic paintings of Japanese suburbia. His most iconic series, entitled Flatballs, features spherical works with mind-bending perspectives.
The theme explored in Samejima’s Flatball series is one of nostalgia and longing for home. He draws inspiration from his own experiences growing up in Japan, as well as the country’s rich cultural heritage. His paintings evoke a sense of familiarity, while also providing an outsider’s perspective on the everyday life of Japanese suburbia.
Seeing Samejima’s Flatballs for the first time was an awe-inspiring experience. The spherical canvases provide a unique point of view that allows us to see familiar scenes in an entirely new way. The photorealism creates a sense of immediacy that can’t be achieved with traditional painting techniques, making it easy to get lost in the details and nuances of each piece.
