Ephemeral Bubble: Art Installation by Mad Architects
Published Oct 17, 2024
Conceived by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, Ephemeral Bubble is a captivating art installation showcased at Japan’s Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, the world’s largest international outdoor art festival. Designed to spark a dialogue between traditional and contemporary elements, this monumental piece integrates with a century-old Japanese house in the serene Murono Village, transforming the historic setting into an extraordinary work of art.
The installation is made from a translucent PVC membrane, designed to mimic a bubble being delicately released from the wooden eaves of the aged house. Inside this imaginative bubble-like structure, visitors experience a unique interplay of light and shadow, as the surrounding countryside subtly filters through the blurred walls. This creates an atmosphere of soft, diffused light, enhancing the space’s potential for emotive and spiritual exploration. The installation’s interior offers an expansive and undefined area, perfect for performances, ceremonies, or quiet contemplation, reflecting the vibrant colors and textures of the natural landscape.
