The Coolest Mod for the ROG Ally: JSAUX Transparent RGB Backplate

Driven by the popularity of the ROG Ally, JSAUX is a company that has been investing heavily in developing new accessories specifically designed for the handheld. We have previously featured their transparent RGB Backplate when it was first announced back in September, and now we have the opportunity to take a closer look at this product and experience it firsthand.

The JSAUX RGB Backplate is designed primarily as an aesthetic mod for the ROG Ally, but it might also come with the added benefit of some extra cooling, as the vents on the back are definitely larger on this custom shell. If you’re into transparent devices and want to give your Ally a stylish upgrade, this is a fun little mod to play with.

What’s in the box?

Inside the package you’ll find all the items and accessories you need to install the transparent shell, as well as a few extra goodies, including two sets of thumbstick caps, back button pads, and a silicone dust cover for the Ally’s XG Mobile port.

Installation

The installation process is extremely easy, and JSAUX put together this handy tutorial to take you through all the steps:

Make sure you power off your Ally before you start, and then simply follow the steps from the video above.

Once you’ve removed the original shell, it’s time to detach the back buttons and rear triggers, as they will be used on the new transparent backplate.
Make sure you don’t lose the small springs that are attached to the back buttons, just behind the screws.

One important step to keep in mind is this black sticker that should go over the light sensor on the motherboard (below). If this little sensor detects light, your ROG Ally won’t turn back on, so make sure you complete this step.

The battery at the bottom of the Ally is covered in silver foil, which doesn’t look particularly great when it’s exposed. To address this, JSAUX created a custom black sticker design that makes the transparent shell look a lot nicer once it’s applied. This step is completely optional, but it does improve the overall look once it’s done, in my opinion.

Once you’re done with that large sticker, you can proceed to install the RGB module, which fits seamlessly between the two fans at the back.

You can now place the new transparent shell on your Ally, and it should snap right into place. Secure all the screws back into the plate and you’re good to go.

Design & Customization

This transparent shell looks great. It’s got a frosted finish that adds an interesting look to the inner workings of the device.

The RGB module is equipped with a built-in 170mAh battery and can be charged through the USB-C port located at the top of the transparent shell. When fully charged, it should offer approximately 3 hours of continuous RGB lighting.

The module has 5 different lighting modes that can be adjusted by pressing the button located above it. Additionally, holding down the button for a few seconds will turn off the lights entirely.

The look of the RGB lighting module can be customized with a few pre-designed options that are included in the package, such as PlayStation icons or the NASA logo, but you can also create your own personalized graphics, using one of the four blank plates provided in the box.

At first, I tried some of the provided designs, but later on I decided to have a bit of fun by customizing the slides with various themes. While the tutorial video from JSAUX includes instructions on how to do this manually, I chose to use a blade cutter to make stencils and silhouettes from black stickers instead. Here’s one with the SEGA logo:

A few more custom graphics for the RGB module: a Super Mario silhouette and the Foo Fighters logo.

Final thoughts

If you like customizing your devices and want to give your ROG Ally a fresh new look, the JSAUX RGB Backplate is one of the coolest mods out there. The clear shell is super easy to install and looks great with its frosted finish and colorful RGB lighting effects. You’ll have the option to personalize the RGB module using the designs included in the box, or get even more creative by designing your own graphics to make your Ally stand out even more.

If you’re considering purchasing this product, now is a great time to take advantage of the Christmas sale on JSAUX’s website, with discounts of up to 40% on their accessories. Plus, if you purchase the backplate during the sale, you’ll also receive 6 free Christmas-themed slides for the RGB module, in addition to the 5 pre-designed slides that are already included in the package. Happy holidays!
