Anatomical Sculptures by Masao Kinoshita

Published Feb 6, 2023

Masao Kinoshita is a Japanese artist who creates incredible figurative sculptures that are skinned to reveal their inner muscular and bone structures. The sculptures are so detailed that they could easily be mistaken for medical school écorchés.

Masao starts his process with clay prototypes, but the final pieces are made from FRP cast into a mold of plaster. The sculptures are then carefully filed to find the perfect final shape and he completes the work by colouring them with oil paint and pencils.

Every curve, crease and joint is carefully considered to ensure an authentic representation of his subject’s anatomy, and yet it’s not just a technical exercise; Kinoshita infuses his creations with an undeniable beauty.
