Deconstructed Portraits by Alma Haser
Published Sep 13, 2023
Alma Haser, a German photographer currently based in the UK, has etched her name in the contemporary art scene with her unique approach to portraiture. Known for her complex and meticulously crafted portraits, Alma’s work is truly captivating.
She fuses traditional portraiture conventions with intriguing distortions, creating unique images that are both familiar and otherworldly. Her primary medium is photography, but her work transcends the usual boundaries of the field. Alma is known for using techniques usually associated with craft, such as weaving, folding, cutting, stitching, and painting. This combination results in portraits that are deeply layered and complex.
One of Alma’s most interesting projects is “Cosmic Surgery”. In this series, she combines photography with origami techniques to create distorted, unearthly portraits. The faces of her subjects are transformed into geometric compositions, adding a surreal touch to the familiar form of the human face.
If you’re interested in following her journey, take a look at Alma’s Instagram profile to learn more about the artist’s creative process, and her love for thread, paper, and puzzles.
