D Fin House by Craig Steely Architecture
Published Apr 25, 2023
On the slopes above Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii, there’s a house that’s captured the attention of architects and surfers alike. The D Fin House, designed by Craig Steely Architecture, is a classic pole house with a twist – its round shape seemingly bends perspective and puts the occupant into the expansive view of the Kona coastline.
But the D Fin House isn’t just a pretty shape – it’s a masterclass in how pure geometric shapes can relate to nature. Eight columns support the curved and exposed structure, which frames views that change as you walk around the space.
The steep-roofed loft at the back of the circle is where the building mimics a classic 60s D fin surfboard, creating a strong and unique visual anchor.
