Contemporary Embroidered Portraits by Elena Obando

Elena Obando, better known as Saturno Rosa or Elo, is a Costa Rican artist who works with a variety of materials to express herself in different ways. Her work includes embroidery, oil pastel paintings and handmade jewelry. Among Elena’s creations, her embroidered work stands out as a contemporary take on a traditional medium.

Elena starts her process by using pastels on paper to draw delicate portraits, which are then hand stitched on tulle to create works of art that capture the subtle nuances of human expression. What’s interesting about Elena’s approach to embroidery is her contemporary style. She plays with scale, using oversized wooden hoops to frame her portraits, and incorporates bold colors and simple lines to create a modern feel.
