Constructed Realities: James Casebere’s Unique Photos

Published Mar 13, 2025

James Casebere is an American artist who combines architecture, photography and sculpture to produce captivating pieces. For over four decades, he’s been crafting small-scale architectural models, which he then photographs to create his unique images.

James’ compositions look like flooded, abandoned structures, with a minimalist yet often colorful aesthetic, as if they were lifted from a memory or dream. He cleverly manipulates light and shadow in his photographed models, making these miniature environments feel real and imaginary at the same time. His art often touches on themes like the passage of time, the fragility of human-made spaces, and questions of power and control in architectural design.

Over the years, James’ creations have been showcased in major museum collections such as MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Tate. He has also earned several awards, including three NEA Fellowships and the 2019 Abigail Cohen Rome Prize.
