Comic Book Cars Come to Life in Joshua Vides’ Bold Solo Exhibition

Published Apr 8, 2025

LA-based artist Joshua Vides recently showcased his latest solo exhibition, Check Engine Light, where he gave visitors a chance to step into a black-and-white space where real-life cars looked like they rolled right out of a comic book. To achieve this eye-catching look, Joshua wrapped the rides in white vinyl and meticulously hand-painted them with his signature pop art aesthetic.

Running from February 20-24, this self-funded and self-produced pop-up show turned the ERA Studio space in Downtown Los Angeles into a visual extension of Vides’ artistic vision. Walls and floors mimicked the same comic strip graphic style, creating an immersive environment with a real sense of speed, almost as if the cars were zipping through the pages of a graphic novel. We also can’t help but think of the iconic A-HA “Take on Me” music video when checking out photos of the setup.

You can see more images of the exhibition and take a look behind the scenes over on Joshua’s website and Instagram.
