Clear History: Thomas Doyle’s Miniature Monuments to Our Digital Age
Published Oct 20, 2025
In his thought-provoking series Clear History, American artist Thomas Doyle reimagines elements of contemporary life as if they were ancient ruins, preserved and revered by future civilizations. Known for his intricately detailed miniature worlds, Thomas explores how today’s technologies, from social media and smartphones to Wi-Fi signals and QR codes, might be remembered centuries from now, long after their original purpose has faded.
The works take the form of weathered, classical-style sculptures scattered across tiny landscapes, each one embodying a digital concept that has shaped our era. Figures stare into handheld devices that pierce their faces with beams of light, raise Wi-Fi symbols like sacred offerings, or bear heads transformed into scannable codes. Titles like Infinite Scroll, Clickthrough Rate and Bad Gateway hint at the everyday systems we take for granted, and how they might become future myths, cautionary tales or objects of worship.
