Clarke House by Austin Maynard Architects

Designed by Australian firm Austin Maynard Architects, Clarke House is a clever blend of old and new, tucked away in Melbourne’s inner north. Rather than going for a full knockdown and rebuild, the architects worked with the existing 1980s structure, reshaping it into something fresh and functional without erasing its past. The result is a light-filled, multi-level home that makes smart use of its narrow site and existing bones.

The heart of the house is a central living area that merges seamlessly with the outdoors. Pocket gardens and light wells are strategically placed to bring in natural light and air, creating a sense of openness without sacrificing privacy. These verdant pockets also dissolve the distinction between the garden and the indoors, giving the space a cohesive but dynamic feel.

Upstairs, the architects crafted what the family lovingly calls the “apartment” for their teenage daughters. This self-contained zone includes two bedrooms, a central bathroom, a hidden “pink craft room,” and a study and retreat area complete with a ceiling hammock. The design prioritizes both independence and connection, offering the teenagers their own space while keeping them linked to the family dynamic.

Clarke House is a home that beautifully balances practicality with personality, and a fantastic example of how thoughtful renovations can be just as impactful as flashy new builds.
