Casa Plaj: A Coastal Refuge by extrastudio

Set along the windswept coast of Lourinhã in Portugal, Casa Plaj is a warm and sculptural retreat crafted by Lisbon-based practice extrastudio. Photographed by Clemens Poloczek, the residence feels rooted in the landscape, its sandy terracotta tones echoing the cliffs and fields that surround it.

The house presents a simple gabled profile, but extrastudio uses subtle shifts in volume and texture to give it a quiet complexity. A perforated timber screen forms a sheltered entry, casting patterned light across the courtyard and interiors. From the living spaces, large sliding openings frame sweeping views of the Atlantic and pull the soft coastal breeze straight into the heart of the home.

Inside, the palette remains gentle and tactile. Polished plaster walls, pale stone floors and light timber cabinetry create a calm backdrop for the play of shadow and sun. A circular skylight introduces a drifting pool of daylight that moves across the rooms throughout the day, reinforcing the project’s slow, contemplative rhythm. Beyond the main structure, a long pool stretches toward the tree line, mirroring the horizon and extending the home’s connection with nature. It all adds up to a serene coastal hideaway where time seems to loosen, and where architecture amplifies the beauty of its surroundings.
