Capturing Stillness: Grundtvig’s Church Photos by David Altrath
Published Feb 3, 2026
In his latest series, Hamburg-based photographer David Altrath turns his lens toward Grundtvig’s Church, one of Copenhagen’s most iconic landmarks. Known for its striking expressionist design, this architectural masterpiece was completed in 1940 by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint and is made entirely of yellow Danish brick.
David’s photos beautifully capture the church’s unique structure and its impressive vertical lines. He often shoots straight on, using symmetry and alignment to emphasize the building’s geometry. Light plays a supporting role, sliding across textured surfaces and bringing out subtle shifts in tone. The absence of ornate decorations allows the simplicity of the forms to shine, drawing you in to appreciate the craftsmanship that defines this sacred space.
Across the series, the focus stays on restrained observation. There’s no push for spectacle, just a steady attention to material, proportion and repetition. It’s a strong continuation of David’s architectural studies and a natural fit alongside his previous work.
