Bones and Beasts: Surreal Animal Sculptures by Virginie Gribouilli
Published Jul 28, 2025
French sculptor Virginie Gribouilli creates creatures that feel pulled from both ancient myths and a distant, imagined future. Her work blends animal anatomy with elements of fantasy, resulting in hybrid forms that feel haunting and divine. Inspired by fantastic surrealism and dark art, she uses sculpture as a way to explore emotion, symbolism, and the human connection to nature.
Working primarily with cold porcelain, Virginie crafts animals adorned with copper-like exoskeletons, giving her creations a striking mix of fragility and strength. Each piece feels ritualistic, as if it carries the remnants of an untold story, a fragment of a mythology yet to be written.
Based in Brittany, France, Virginie sees her art as a dialogue between the past, present, and an unknown future. “The most satisfying thing is to start from nothing and create a unique object,” she says. You can explore more of her fascinating work on her website.
