Architectural Hermit Crab Shelters by Aki Inomata
Published Jul 12, 2023
Japanese artist Aki Inomata combines the precision of cutting-edge technology with a deep appreciation for nature to produce beautifully crafted architectural shelters for hermit crabs.
Hermit crabs are known for their habit of moving from one shell to another as they grow. Inspired by this natural behavior, Aki decided to provide these creatures with shelters unlike any they would find in nature. Using a 3D printer, she created clear plastic shells with intricate cityscapes crafted onto them. The result is a series of stunning, semi-transparent shelters that are as much works of art as they are functional homes for hermit crabs.
The designs of the 3D-printed shelters are inspired by various architectural styles from around the world. From the skyscrapers of New York to the windmills of the Netherlands, each shelter reflects a different location. This fusion of architecture and nature is a key aspect of Aki’s work, symbolizing peaceful exchange and coexistence.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Aki’s 3D-printed shelters also serve as an artistic commentary on the concept of belonging and identity. Just as hermit crabs change their shells, humans too often change their homes, adapting to new cultures and environments. In this way, her work invites viewers to reflect on notions of migration, adaptation, and cultural exchange.
