AI Machines: Whimsical 3D Creations by Gao Yang & Kisame
Published Apr 29, 2026
AI Machines is a collection of digital works created by Chinese artists Gao Yang and Kisame (Yu-Lei Wang) created for the WOW Design Competition. The series transforms abstract AI models into tactile, retro-inspired 3D machines, each one rendered with the charm of a toy and the complexity of a functional device.
Back in 2023, when the project took shape, AI still felt unfinished and undefined, slightly opaque to many, and already intimidating to some. Rather than focus on that unease, Gao and Kisame went the other way entirely. Each piece recasts a different AI model as a physical object, part Soviet synthesizer, part Nerf gun, part boombox, loaded with prompts, outputs, dials and looping cables.
By turning invisible algorithms into physical objects, the series reframes AI not as a force acting on people, but as a powerful tool in their hands.
