Abandoned Space Shuttle Photos by Alexander Kaunas
Published Jun 26, 2020
Russian film director and photographer Alexander Kaunas explored the abandoned space base of Baikonur to capture these mesmerizing images of a decrepit shuttle from the Soviet space program ‘Buran’.
“It took us half a year to make this project real. For a few months we were planning, preparing, collecting information about upcoming trip. We crossed the desert in Kazakhstan with huge backpacks, just to see firsthand one of the most famous ghosts of USSR. And what we found there exceeded our expectations. We found this child of the Cold War abandoned in the huge hangar, a unique masterpiece of the space program, ahead of their time, and we are really proud of the people who created it. Sadly, this project wasn’t fit neither for Russia, nor for someone else, and people just left it there and forgot about its existence.”
