Ze Feng’s Deified: How Digital Media Shapes Society

Graphic designer Ze Feng’s latest project, Deified: Dissecting the Post–Spectacle Digital Gaze, dives into the fascinating intersection of society, technology and visual culture. This trifold book unpacks how the internet has amplified ideas from Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle, where society is shaped and often manipulated by the dominance of images. Through extensive research and experimental design, Ze explores the transformation from Debord’s original “spectacle” to a new, hyper-digital phenomenon he calls “Spectacle 2.0.”

The project is structured into three parts. The first traces the historical roots of the spectacle, from mass production to television’s golden age, and onward to the digital era. The second section zeroes in on the rise of the Internet, spanning ARPANET’s origins to today’s hyper-connected digital landscape, where tech is a driving force of societal change. Finally, the third part bridges these two worlds, illustrating how digital technologies haven’t just intensified the spectacle but fundamentally reshaped it.
