Weight and Grace: Bear Sculptures by Michel Bassompierre

Late French artist Michel Bassompierre spent five decades distilling animals into their most essential forms, and few subjects suited that instinct better than the bear. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Bassompierre built his extensive practice on thousands of sketches made at zoos and the National Museum of Natural History, studying anatomy until it could be set aside in favor of form.

Working across bronze, marble and alabaster, he shaped his animals with an economy of detail that never sacrificed their anatomical character. Rounded bellies, heavy limbs and compact heads flow into one another with few sharp transitions, allowing light to move softly across the surfaces.

His bears can feel monumental even at a smaller scale, while their relaxed postures and subtle expressions lend them an unexpected gentleness. For Bassompierre, that softness carried weight beyond aesthetics. He called his sculptures “toys,” made first for his own pleasure, and spoke of animals as kin rather than subject matter. Bassompierre sadly passed away on April 21, 2026, at the age of 78, leaving behind a distinctive body of work that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
