Color, Memory & Meaning: Victoria Villasana’s Vibrant Threaded Portraits
Published Oct 1, 2025
Mexican textile artist Victoria Villasana continues to find inventive ways to merge photography and embroidery, bringing black-and-white portraits to life with vivid bursts of color. Her signature style layers yarn into geometric patterns, tears and radiant flourishes, transforming found images into stories of resilience, identity and cultural memory.
Through her work, Victoria reimagines both iconic figures and anonymous subjects, using thread as a visual and symbolic connector. By pairing stark monochrome imagery with vibrant fiber interventions, she emphasizes contrasts between past and present, fragility and strength, grief and transformation.
Her practice was recently captured in a short documentary directed by Felicia Manning, which explores her creative process and the power of working with her hands. The film dives into her inspiration and reveals how her careful choice of color and form makes each portrait pulse with emotion.
