Unsettling the Familiar: Ian Strange’s Architectural Interventions
Published May 4, 2026
Ian Strange is an Australian transdisciplinary artist whose practice treats the suburban home as both subject and canvas, a loaded symbol to be interrogated, defaced, illuminated, and collapsed.
His most recognised body of work spans a decade of large-scale interventions across the United States, New Zealand, Australia and Poland. Working directly on real houses, he strips the domestic dwelling of its comfort and familiarity by cutting into facades, flooding interiors with light, spray-painting oversized letters and symbols across cladding, or coating entire buildings in black. What remains is something more exposed: a structure that once represented safety now broadcasting distress, erasure or danger.
The work refuses easy metaphor. It doesn’t mourn the suburbs so much as hold them accountable, for what they promise, what they conceal, and what they leave behind. Each intervention is also a photograph, a film, a document. The house becomes evidence.
Ian’s mid-career survey monograph Disturbed Home was published by Damiani Editore in 2022. Explore more of his practice at ianstrange.com.
