Ukiyo Works: Illustrations by Shinji Tsuchimochi
Published Nov 19, 2024
Tokyo-based illustrator Shinji Tsuchimochi draws inspiration from the traditional Ukiyo-e art style to portray modern Japan through a whimsical lens.
Ukiyo-e, which flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries in Japan, was not just a mirror of the vibrant Edo period but also showcased the era’s advancements in printmaking technology. This art style continues to inspire artists globally to this day, from French Impressionists to contemporary creators like Shinji.
Shinji’s ongoing Ukiyo Works series captures the charm of everyday moments, the bustling energy of urban life and the tranquility of nature. His illustrations are incredibly intricate and full of playful elements to discover.
You can find a large selection of Shinji’s pieces compiled in a book titled UKIYO, featuring more than 200 artworks. And if you’d like to discover even more of his work, you can also take a look at his portfolio on Behance.
