Tony Cragg: Sculpting the Material World

Published Jun 5, 2025

Tony Cragg’s sculptures don’t sit still, they swirl, twist, fold and push their way into space like they’re trying to say something. Known for his dynamic approach to form, Cragg experiments with everything from bronze and steel to plastic and wax. What makes him one of the world’s most accomplished sculptors isn’t just his material mastery, but the way he uncovers unexpected relationships between shapes, textures and the spaces in between. There’s always a sense of tension and movement, anchored by a deep curiosity about the natural world.

At the heart of Cragg’s practice is a fascination with geology and natural history. You can feel that influence in the way his sculptures echo the flow of landscapes or the layering of rock formations. His process begins with drawing, sketching out ideas that evolve through a hands-on dialogue with his materials. It’s experimental, but also deeply intentional, creating a rhythm between thought and making. The results are works that feel both grounded in nature and strangely otherworldly.

Originally from Liverpool and based in Germany since 1977, Cragg has been a central figure in contemporary sculpture since the 1980s. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale and took home the Turner Prize in 1988, but accolades have never been the focus. Instead, he’s remained committed to pushing the boundaries of material, form, and how we experience the physical world around us.
