The Human Skull as Canvas: Sculptures by Andy Firth
Published Feb 2, 2023
Australian artist Andy Firth, also known as “skullptor”, creates macabre yet majestic sculptures using human skulls as his canvas. The skulls are handcrafted using mixed media such as acrylic, clay and cinema-grade urethane resin, with the aim of replicating the look and feel of real bone.
The artist reimagines these dark symbols as unique art objects that can be fully decorated with trinkets and jewelry, or become something else entirely like a pineapple or a beehive. Firth’s gorgeous works also serve as a reminder of our mortality and provide an opportunity for reflection.
His entire creative process can take up to four months to complete, and due to overwhelming demand he only releases four to six pieces per year. These one-of-a-kind pieces are sold through his company Jack of The Dust, a name inspired by an 1800s Royal Navy term that represents Firth’s revival of characters, cultures and the stories that surround them.
