The Floating Market Series: Photos by Tom Hegen
Published Oct 23, 2023
German photographer Tom Hegen is known for his striking aerial photography projects that explore the impact of human presence on Earth. One of our favorite recent projects from his portfolio is “The Floating Market” series, a riveting visual narrative that brings to life the unique and traditional trading practices of food traders at the Floating Market in Banjarmasin, Borneo.
In most compositions, Tom presents a single boat at a time, allowing viewers to focus their attention on the intricate details of each boat and its trader. Some of the other images, however, capture two boats side by side, engaged in the act of trading goods. These moments are depicted with a sense of calm and serenity, offering an intimate glimpse into the age-old bartering system that forms the backbone of this community.
