The Alfa: Cardboard Bicycle by Izhar Gafni
Published Nov 21, 2012
“The Alfa” is a sustainable cardboard bicycle that is sturdy and waterproof, weighs around 9kg and can be manufactured at about $10 per unit.
The bike was created by Israeli engineer Izhar Gafni:
“The idea is like Japanese origami. You fold it once and then it doesn’t become twice the strength, it’s almost three times the strength. So I took it from there and did the same thing with cardboard.”
Israeli investment group ERB is currently fundraising and developing the bicycle for production, in partnership with Gafni.
