Symbiosis: Illustration Series by Weston Wei

Weston Wei, a Chinese artist based in New York City, explored his personal battle with allergic rhinitis through a collection of illustrations titled Symbiosis. This project is a narrative that unfolds Weston’s journey from pain and frustration through treatment, and finally to a harmonious coexistence with his condition.

Symbiosis is divided into three chapters, each representing a phase in Weston’s experience with allergic rhinitis. The first chapter lays bare the initial shock and discomfort of learning about his disease. The second chapter transitions into the realm of treatment, where Weston explores the use of drugs, syringes and traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The final chapter is perhaps the most transformative, focusing on psychological adjustment.

Through this impressive series of artworks, Weston eloquently illustrates his journey towards accepting allergic rhinitis as a part of his life. This acceptance doesn’t come easily but is achieved through a profound understanding that physical ailments are intertwined with one’s psychological state.
