Stoplights: Photo Composite Series by Chris Hytha

Published Apr 9, 2024

Philadelphia-based designer and visual artist Chris Hytha explores urban utility poles and traffic lights as sculptural objects in his striking Stoplights series. These ubiquitous objects, which often blend into the background amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, become the focal point of Chris’ collection of photo composites.

At the heart of Stoplights is Chris’ desire to exaggerate and express his feelings about the omnipresence of signs and poles in the city, as he explains:

“I have been thinking alot about signs, and all these poles scattered through the city streets.”

“These elements are largely in response to the introduction of the automobile, and I can’t help but imagine the city before all these squares of text shouting at you.”

Through his lens, these utilitarian elements transform into complex sculptures, prompting reflection on the evolution of cities and the role that traffic signage has played in shaping our urban experiences.
