Soft as a Stone: Marble Pillows by Håkon Anton Fagerås

Published May 3, 2024

“Down” is a collection of incredible marble sculptures created by Norwegian artist Håkon Anton Fagerås. These remarkable pieces challenge our senses by presenting the soft, inviting form of a pillow with the cold hardness of stone.

The series, which began in 2018, showcases Håkon’s mastery over marble, transforming it into something paradoxically soft and cozy. Using a pneumatic hammer along with other carving tools, he carves large, realistic pillows out of marble. The level of detail in each piece is astonishing—every crease, fold and indentation is meticulously re-created, offering the illusion of softness and pliability where there is none.

Yet, for Håkon, the Down series transcends mere technical skill. He sees the pillow as a “beautiful symbol of life,” noting that “life begins and ends in bed, and some of life’s most beautiful and some of life’s hardest moments are spent there.” This philosophical underpinning adds layers of meaning to the sculptures, encouraging contemplation and introspection.
