Sharp Fragments: Furniture & Lighting by Nissa Kinzhalina
Published Mar 27, 2026
Nissa Kinzhalina approaches furniture as an extension of architecture, shaping tables and lighting pieces through sharp planes and intersecting volumes. Her work explores tension and balance rather than symmetry, with forms that feel carved from larger structures and reduced to their essential elements.
Raised in Kazakhstan, Nissa developed a strong sense of spatial thinking early on, studying large empty spaces and visualizing objects within them before they existed. That imaginative instinct shaped her process. In her work, surfaces tilt, meet and support each other in ways that feel precise without becoming rigid, with compositions built from angled panels that create weight, rhythm and contrast.
Her work also reflects an interest in Japanese architecture, particularly in its restraint and clarity. Details are stripped back, edges remain clean and light becomes part of the composition. Across both furniture and lighting, each object is a study in structure, where function and form are closely tied and space is defined as much by what’s removed as what remains.
