Retro-Futurism on Wheels: The Bertone Runabout

More than five decades after its original debut, the iconic Bertone Runabout is making a spectacular comeback. First conceived by legendary designer Marcello Gandini in 1969, the radical concept car helped shape the future of Italian automotive design, influencing classics like the Fiat X1/9. Now, following its initial revival announcement in 2024, the new Runabout has entered pre-production, reimagined as an exclusive, handcrafted sports car that celebrates its heritage with a striking retro-futuristic aesthetic.

The new design stays true to the original’s dramatic wedge-shaped silhouette, combining a sharply pointed nose, sculpted bodywork and an abruptly truncated rear. Inspired by the sleek forms of 1960s racing speedboats, the Runabout is available in two configurations: an open-top Barchetta and a Targa with a removable carbon-fiber roof. Inside, rich red leather upholstery, exposed mechanical details and a minimalist dashboard create a distinctly analog atmosphere, complete with a nautical compass and a gated manual shifter.

Beneath its sculptural exterior, a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 produces 475 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Built around a lightweight aluminum chassis with carbon-fiber bodywork, the Runabout promises exhilarating performance to match its stunning looks. This extraordinary revival will be limited to just 25 examples worldwide, with prices starting at €390,000 before taxes.
