Emillie Ferris is a self-taught artist from the UK who uses traditional embroidery methods to create gorgeous contemporary art inspired by flora and fauna. Her work features intricate patterns depicting butterflies, bees, bunnies and other animals. From her website:
“I took up embroidery in 2013 and fell in love instantly. After a few years of embroidering for my own enjoyment and posting pictures of my pieces on Instagram, I started to receive custom pet portrait requests and this enabled me to start making a gradual transition into embroidering full time, yay!”
Emillie has spent nearly a decade refining her distinct embroidery technique, which involves using a variety of stitches to create vivid scenes on fabric.
She offers a course teaching her advanced techniques at Domestika, an online learning platform for creative professionals. In the course, she shares insights on using the long and short stitch technique to create realistic embroidered pieces, even for those who never used a needle before. She has also compiled her techniques in a book called “Paint with Thread: A step-by-step guide to embroidery”, available at Amazon.
