Playing with the Past: Nostalgic Paintings by Matthew Blackburn

South African artist Matthew Blackburn gives the traditional still life a nostalgic update, filling his painted scenes with PlayStation controllers, Froot Loops, Rubik’s Cubes, plastic water guns and other objects pulled straight from childhood.

Matthew’s recent work draws on the tradition of vanitas painting, replacing many of its familiar symbols with the disposable products and mass-produced objects of contemporary life. Coke bottles, plastic bags and packaging share the canvas with skulls, fruit, flowers and other classical motifs, allowing him to explore topics like consumerism, addiction, mortality and our impact on the environment.

Some scenes are more playful, as seen in Saturday Morning 2001, which places viewers inside a childhood bedroom packed with a PlayStation, CRT TV, skateboard, Furby toy and other familiar pop-culture references. His work intentionally draws on the emotional pull of personal memories and the visual language of classical painting to make nostalgia feel more reflective, looking not only at the objects we once loved, but at the passage of time itself.
