Personalized, Handmade & Upcycled: EIGA’s Bold Holiday Cards
Published Aug 13, 2025
A few years ago, Hamburg-based independent design agency EIGA took their “practice what you preach” mantra to heart, crafting a memorable seasonal greeting that combined sustainability, personalization and bold visuals.
Instead of coming up with freshly printed cards, the team delved into their stash of discarded cardboard boxes (destined for the trash) and gave them a second life. Each piece was cut, folded and assembled by hand, transforming packaging waste into vibrant, tactile keepsakes.
The main element of the design was a custom display font, crafted exclusively for the project. The agency used the typeface to produce oversized, graphic initials customized for each client, collaborator and friend, ensuring no two cards were alike. These bold letterforms became windows, revealing fragments of the recycled cardboard’s original colors, textures and typography. Even the offcuts from the process were put to use, repurposed into matching envelopes.
