Organisms on the Move: Abstract Sculptures by Eelco Hilgersom

Published Jan 27, 2025

Eelco Hilgersom’s Habitat series invites us to take a closer look at the beauty of natural design. Born in Amsterdam, Hilgersom grew up fascinated by the structures found in nature, from twisting roots to delicate shells. This curiosity drives his work, where he uses contrasts in shape, color, and material to spark a sense of wonder. Each sculpture captures that tension, flowing yet precise, familiar yet surreal, creating pieces that encourage the viewer to explore what lies beneath the surface.

Eelco’s sculptures feel alive, with captivating organic forms that seem to crawl and twist, as if they’re creatures frozen mid-motion. Made from thousands of colored lenses, they shift and transform depending on the light, engaging the eye in beautiful and unexpected ways.

Another interesting aspect about the Habitat series is its flexibility. These objects can be displayed alone, in a group, or spread across a wall, creating a dazzling display of light and color. The lenses catch sunlight, casting shimmering patterns that brighten up their surroundings. This adaptability means each arrangement can feel personal, transforming a simple space into something dynamic and alive.
