Old-School Cool: The Bold Art of Paul Thurlby

Published May 22, 2025

British illustrator Paul Thurlby has a knack for making the old feel entirely new. Originally from Nottingham and now based in Brighton, he first caught the world’s attention with Alphabet, a children’s book turned design sensation that earned him the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi Opera Prima Award in 2013. Since then, his bold, retro-inspired style has become instantly recognizable, from the pages of The New Yorker to campaigns for Vespa and Airbnb.

Paul’s work draws heavily from his passion for vintage posters, channeling their graphic simplicity and vibrant energy into contemporary illustrations that feel at once nostalgic and fresh. “While the illustrations are finished off digitally, they still retain a human touch,” he explains, a quality that makes his work resonate across both commercial and editorial contexts.

Whether it’s a playful typographic print or a national campaign for Transport for London, Paul’s versatility is part of his appeal. His illustrations have reached audiences around the globe, including high-profile clients in the UK, US and beyond. Represented by Handsome Frank, one of the UK’s top illustration agencies, Paul continues to blend vintage charm with modern creative thinking.
