Naoshima Island Beauty: Black & White Photos by Darrel Rhea
Published Apr 29, 2025
Naoshima Island in Japan may be small, but it’s bursting with art and creativity. With its world-class museums, striking sculptures, and architecture designed by the famous Tadao Ando, the island offers a unique mix of tranquility and artistic wonder. Seattle-based photographer Darrel Rhea captures this balance beautifully in his black and white images, showcasing a place where creativity and nature seamlessly come together.
Reflecting on his time there, Darrel describes Naoshima as a “small, quiet place with visual surprises around every corner.” His photography focuses on the rich textures, bold contrasts and striking geometry seen around the island, showcasing the subtle yet powerful essence of the place and revealing intriguing details around each corner. Through his lens, the interplay of light and shadow on Naoshima’s sculptures and buildings turns into beautiful visual poetry.
