Monochrome Monuments: The Architectural Photography of Thomas de Franzoni
Published Jun 4, 2025
Quiet, monochromatic and deeply atmospheric, Thomas de Franzoni’s Echoes in Stone series is a powerful introduction to his architectural photography. Shot in early 2025, the series traces Berlin’s layered past through images of monumental icons like the Victory Column, as well as overlooked spaces like underpasses and empty plazas. Stripped of color, the images lean into shadow, texture and restraint, inviting viewers to notice what usually goes unseen.
But Echoes in Stone is just one facet of Thomas’ evolving approach to architecture. Across his wider body of work, we see a consistent focus on mood, clarity and the emotional resonance of space. Stark concrete forms, isolated stairwells and empty corridors are recurring subjects, composed with precision and lit with an almost sculptural sensitivity. It’s less about documenting buildings and more about distilling their essence.
Originally known for vivid, color-rich compositions, Thomas has since pared back his palette to explore the depth of monochrome. The result is work that feels both grounded and introspective. Whether in Berlin or beyond, his photographs invite stillness. They don’t explain, they observe, offering us a moment to engage with space, light and the subtle architecture of feeling.
