Mixing Things Up: Marçal Prats Redesigns MIX Interiors

We featured Marçal Prats and his experimental print series earlier this year, and now he’s back with a bold editorial redesign for MIX Interiors, the UK’s leading magazine for commercial interior design and architecture. Published every two months since 2000, the magazine has been given a fresh visual identity that balances playful experimentation with a carefully structured design system.

Rather than locking every page into a fixed template, Marçal’s redesign lets headers, color and composition respond to the content. Each feature title works as a typographic reading of its article. He also preserves the magazine’s longstanding tradition of commissioning bespoke cover artwork from leading design studios, introducing a refined framework developed around the distinctive geometric MIX logo. Two colors are drawn from each cover and carried throughout the issue, creating a cohesive yet constantly evolving identity.

Underpinning it all is a twelve-column grid in the tradition of Josef Müller-Brockmann, built on a single unit: where two gutters cross, they form a perfect square. That measure governs columns, rows and margins, while the geometric TT Commons Pro and the condensed Scotch Text divide the typographic work. It’s a strict structure designed to make room for play.
