Mini Mart City Park: A Former Gas Station Reborn as a Cultural Hub
Published Aug 25, 2025
Seattle’s Mini Mart City Park is a fantastic example of how design can breathe new life into forgotten spaces. Initiated by the artist collective SuttonBeresCuller and designed by local studio GO’C, the project turned an abandoned 1930s gas station into a thriving arts and cultural hub.
The 1,500-square-foot building and surrounding 3,000-square-foot park were designed to bring people together. A central courtyard links the two main volumes, featuring a gallery and community space at the front and utility areas at the back, creating an adaptable open-air zone for everything from art installations to movie nights. The rooftop, planted with sedums and grasses alongside solar panels, adds another gathering spot with sweeping views.
Celebrated with multiple AIA awards, Mini Mart City Park shows the power of architecture to merge green space, culture and community. What used to be an abandoned lot is now buzzing with activity, a place where Seattle locals can meet up, get creative or just enjoy some time together.
