Luminous Sacred Paintings by Jacek Hajnos

Polish painter, graphic artist and Dominican friar Jacek Hajnos brings a striking contemporary sensibility to sacred art, creating luminous paintings that reinterpret biblical stories through dramatic light, intimate human emotion and unexpected perspectives.

Many of his compositions appear to glow from within. Rather than relying on traditional halos or heavenly light descending from above, Jacek often places the source of illumination at the heart of the scene itself. The effect owes something to Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro, but Hajnos pushes the contrast further into near-fluorescence, treating illumination as a visible, almost tactile substance rather than a lighting effect.

Jacek frequently combines classical religious iconography with modern compositional ideas. Dramatic overhead viewpoints, cropped figures, simplified geometric forms and expansive fields of negative space create images that feel both timeless and unmistakably contemporary. Alongside traditional biblical subjects, his work also reflects on compassion, homelessness, forgiveness and everyday acts of grace, themes shaped by his background as both an artist and a Dominican friar.
