Iwagumi Air Scape: A Mesmerizing Interactive Installation at Marina Bay

Published Jun 24, 2024

“Iwagumi Air Scape” is an extraordinary 4900-square meter art installation in Singapore that brings the serenity of nature to the busy environment of a metropolis.

Developed by art and technology studio ENESS for i Light Singapore 2024, this interactive installation draws inspiration from the Japanese art form of Iwagumi, a technique pioneered by legendary aquarist Takashi Amano, which emphasizes harmony and unity through simplicity in stone placement within underwater gardens. ENESS has transferred this concept from aquascaping to an open-air setting, delivering a monumental public statement about nature.

Although they look real, these rock formations are actually inflatable structures cleverly designed to mimic the appearance of massive boulders, with textured surfaces that trick observers into believing they are made of solid rock weighing thousands of tons. This sensory experience is further enriched by an intricate soundscape that envelops the installation. Visitors are immersed in a symphony of nature, with sounds of birds, frogs, crickets, monkeys, bats and mountain streams. Each rock triggers different sounds as people move through the installation, adding layers to the overall experience. And as day turns to night, the installation transforms into a vivid spectacle with individual rocks glowing bright like embers.
