Irreverent, Street-Sharp Branding for Bonker Bao by Rubio & del Amo
Published Feb 25, 2026
Spanish studio Rubio & del Amo channels the frenetic energy of a Shinjuku alleyway into the heart of Murcia with their bold branding for Bonker Bao. The project reimagines the traditional steamed bun as a blank canvas for explosive, cross-cultural flavors, positioning the concept somewhere between high-end gastronomy and raw street culture.
The visual identity balances graphic minimalism with chaotic urban textures. Electric yellow dominates the palette, offset by stark black typography and a mischievous smiley icon that turns the bao into a character. Tactile wooden steamers featuring playful, protruding “tongue” tabs add a physical layer to the brand’s irreverent tone.
Inside, the studio built a modular environment using stacked red Coca-Cola crates and vibrant neon signage, effectively blurring the line between a restaurant interior and a late-night Tokyo street. The launch campaign pushed the attitude further, using pixelated censorship to tease the product and frame the bao as something slightly illicit and worth discovering.
