Interplanetary Travel: Dani Guindo Turns Iceland Into a Mars Basecamp

Photographer Dani Guindo captures Iceland as an alien world in Interplanetary Travel, a striking series commissioned by outdoor products manufacturer Heimplanet. Shot across vast volcanic landscapes, the images transform the country’s dark terrain, winding rivers and barren mountain ranges into scenes that could easily belong on another planet.

The project stages Heimplanet’s Cloudbreak tent as a Mars-like basecamp, with its geometric inflatable frame looking right at home within the rugged otherworldly surroundings. Seen from above, the compact structure becomes a tiny outpost against sprawling fields of rock and sediment, while closer shots emphasize its angular construction and futuristic appearance. The visual connection to space exploration is heightened by Dani’s dramatic treatment of the landscape, with deep reds, burnt oranges and glowing golds that make Iceland look remarkably like the red planet.

The wider aerial photographs are just as compelling, revealing braided waterways, fractured surfaces and enormous stretches of untouched terrain that walk the line between documentary landscape photography and science-fiction imagery.
