INS/IDE/OUT: Ceramic Sculptures by Lena Guberman
Published Apr 1, 2025
INS/IDE/OUT is an intriguing series by Lena Guberman featuring small clay figures with a unique and slightly unsettling charm. Each sculpture reveals a different facet of the same character, with their inner emotions spilling out in fantastical ways. Some are cloaked in drips of black ink, while others sprout bizarre creatures from their bellies or are dotted with large red warts all over. These figures may be odd, but they feel relatable too, like little glimpses into the emotional chaos we all carry.
From a young age, Lena was determined to become an artist. She picked up drawing at just five years old and eventually established herself as a successful illustrator. For years, she honed her craft in visual storytelling, even earning awards from the Israel Museum for her children’s book illustrations. But then came the itch for something more tangible, a sense of volume that drawing alone couldn’t provide. That’s when she turned to sculpture, merging her passion for imaginative narratives with three-dimensional art. Her creations often draw inspiration from her own experiences, intertwining flashes of childhood, family connections and the nuances of femininity, all sprinkled with a touch of fantasy.
